WHAT IS TEF?
TEF – Test d’évaluation de français
The Test d’Évaluation de Français (TEF) is an international benchmark exam created by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris Ile-de-France. It measures your level of knowledge and skills in French across multiple competencies. The certification is valid for two years and is recognized by numerous institutions worldwide.

TEF Tout Public
Designed for personal, academic, or professional assessment. Ideal if you need a general evaluation of your French skills.
TEF IRN
Specifically for “Intégration, Résidence et Nationalité”. Required for obtaining French or Swiss nationality or a residence permit.
TEF Canada / TEFaQ
The official tests for immigration procedures to Canada or Québec. Essential for your points-based application.
TEF Études
Mandatory for international students wishing to enroll in undergraduate programs (Licence) at a French university.
HOW IS THE TEF ASSESSED?
TEF is a progressive multilevel test (A1 to C2) based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and Canadian Language Benchmarks. You do not choose a level before registering; your results indicate your level for each skill.
Note: Grammar & Vocabulary may be assessed in some versions. Results are available 4 to 6 weeks after the test.
